Areola pigmentation (also known as areola repigmentation) is a tattooing procedure, generally performed on breast cancer survivors who've undergone reconstructive surgery. The plastic surgeon may graft a nipple onto the breast. In that case, the tattoo artist, with the approval of the client on the shape and color, will tattoo an areola around the nipple, and the same natural color over the nipple, for a natural esthetic. If the surgeon does not create a nipple, the artist can simulate a 3D look using shading and other artistry techniques.
